First post and a little nervous. What to talk about? OMG.. quick, think of something…
How about: how did I get here?
I’ve lived in a few different states. Grew up in Indiana, but was born in New Jersey. Before Indiana we lived in Virginia, North& South Carolina. After Indiana, I took a job in Illinois, moved to Tennessee and eventually settled in Virginia where, in time and a divorce, I met this amazing guy that was just as weird as I was. (Together 5 years before getting married in 2003.)
I’d had a lot of computer related jobs, but I wanted something different. Following my heart, I took a job at a local veterinarians office where I learned, on the job, how to be a Vet Tech. I LOVED THIS JOB. It was a lot of hard work, but I loved helping animals. What did me in was the 12-14 hour days on concrete floors and I developed plantar fasciitis. It took me several years to recover from that. But I still needed to work…
My boyfriend got a me a job working for the same company he did – in mental health – caring for individuals who had been released from mental facilities. This job changed my life. In time I became an Assistant Group Home Manager and then later left to work closer to home in the same field. In total, I work in a mental health related job for almost 20 years.
In that time, I picked up more skills with computers and technology advanced. I ended up working with a gal making websites. She did the code, I made graphics. I ended up learning how to edit code she was using and later she sold the company to me.
Over time I scaled my online work back as my non-online job became more difficult and the stress of it all, eventually, was too much. My health severely declined. After 12.5 years at my current job I let it go to focus on my health – mental and physical.
It’s been almost two years now since I made that choice and I’ve never been happier. I spend my time crafting (I’ve become resin jewelry obsessed!) and I thought it was time to start my online work back up. Being your own boss is quite liberating.
